His work has appeared in the Filipino Journal and on CBC Radio’s “Content Factory.” In May 2008 he won the Winnipeg CBC Poetry Face Off. Currently Nereo works for Graffiti Arty Programming, and runs a hip hop studio workshop for youth in Point Douglas, in downtown Winnipeg.
“Word Play” is a Literary/Theatre based workshop in which students explore and develop their creative voice through the art of Spoken Word. The workshop covers topics from historical context of Spoken Word to the business of being an artist. The objective is for each participant to design their own personal story, rant, lyric, monologue or poem. Each student will receive one-on-one editorial assistance with their individual writing piece throughout the program.
Students will engage in physical activities such as meditation and yoga exercises to help build awareness and focus the mind. They will also be exposed to different exercises designed to build self-confidence and develop strong performance dynamics.
Finally, the students will be given the opportunity to showcase their work in a non-competitive poetry SLAM setting. The main objective is to overcome the fear of speaking your mind.
